On July 19, 2024, "Angels Unaware" premiered as part of the Arts for EveryBody campaign funded by the One Nation One Project. This project brought together 18 cities and counties across the United States to create a large-scale participatory art project on the same day, celebrating the positive impact of the arts on mental and physical well-being. "Angels Unaware" was created in Harlan County by local residents and is the tenth production of Higher Ground. This original musical drama, developed in collaboration with guest artists, is based on interviews conducted by Southeast students and community members. Through story and song, "Angels Unaware" explores the unique Appalachian approach to caring for ourselves and each other. It was an honor to present this tribute to the spirit of Appalachian community care on a national stage, especially in contrast to other communities participating in the project. We are deeply grateful for the ONOP and Arts for EveryBody who made this work possible, allowing us to highlight the rich culture of the Appalachian region. "Angels Unaware" was also showcased during the MAMAW Festival, part of our One Nation, One Project campaign and the Arts for Everyone initiative, reinforcing the importance of art in wellness.
