First Electrical Training Complete in Harlan!
The Harlan County Community Foundation is proud to partner with the Mountain Training Network, a part of the Appalachian Program at Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College, Tim Long and the Electrical Technology Program at Southeast, Total Electric, USDA's RBDG program, the James Graham Brown Foundation, and Harlan city and county governments, to do a workforce development project training local workers as they wire the main floor of the old Belk Building in downtown Harlan. MTN and HCCF have also worked in partnership to roof the Belk Building with support from the Appalachian Regional Commission. The plan is for the Belk Building to be a mixed use space, with a restaurant space, community gathering space, retail/gallery space, apartments, and co-working spaces. Fundraising is ongoing and there is as yet no completion date for the project. Thanks to Hub + Weber architects for the design images.- HCCF

About Our Construction Trainings
|
The construction industry is growing quickly and companies are desperately searching for skilled and experienced workers. Many projects that were started or scheduled to start, prior to the pandemic are now restarting and more are being announced every day. The Mountain Training Network (MTN) believes that equipping workers with valuable skills to compete in the construction industry benefits, not only the workers and their families, but also the community as well. Helping downtown revitalization progress and improve the general economic health of the area. This individual and community growth is our goal. Thus, MTN is committed to hosting trainings targeting specific areas that are in demand within the construction community. We regularly meet with company representatives, past/current trainees, and local government officials to determine what new trainings we need to create to be most effective and best serve the needs of our trainees. We at MTN strive to help each trainee overcome any challenges or barriers in achieving their personal goals. Partnering with the Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College many trainees have gone on to pursue further education and/or obtain their GED. Many of our trainees have also gained employment and retained jobs with the skills and connections gained in MTN's trainings. MTN has previously offered a series of trainings in PVC roofing/ including demolition, repair and also included safety and best practices on the job. A tuckpoint training was done in conjunction with the installation of the "Pentunia" mural in downtown Harlan. After a conversation with an official from SKCTCS two asbestos mitigation supervisor trainings were done. A hands on mitigation training, in conjunction with Appalachian Arts Alliance in Hazard, helped to allow trainees gain experience and skills by working alongside an experience crew of mitigation specialists. These various trainings have resulted in many trainees finding employment or career paths to explore. We are currently in the process of adding other construction site skill sets to our trainings. These hands-on trainings will be offered at various partner sites throughout our service region. Trainings will range in time based on the size of each project. This work will focus on mitigation, building, demolition, roofing techniques and more. MTN trainings are led by a certified individuals, a representative from the supply company (if available), and the MTN construction manager. Mitigation trainings will be led by a trained mitigation supervisor and the MTN construction manager. Proposed training topics include mold mitigation, electrical, concrete work, plumbing, asbestos mitigation, lead paint mitigation, and membrane roofing. More will be added as the interest and industry requires. If there is a training you would like to see offered or you would like to join a training, please contact us! All trainees receive a certificate of completion and a stipend. You can always join our online mailing list and be notified when we begin future trainings. Click here. |
