The Harlan County Community Foundation is proud to partner with the Mountain Training Network, a part of the Appalachian Program at Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College, Tim Long and the Electrical Technology Program at Southeast, Total Electric, USDA's RBDG program, the James Graham Brown Foundation, and Harlan city and county governments, to do a workforce development project training local workers as they wire the main floor of the old Belk Building in downtown Harlan. MTN and HCCF have also worked in partnership to roof the Belk Building with support from the Appalachian Regional Commission. The plan is for the Belk Building to be a mixed use space, with a restaurant space, community gathering space, retail/gallery space, apartments, and co-working spaces. Fundraising is ongoing and there is as yet no completion date for the project. Thanks to Hub + Weber architects for the design images.- HCCF

About MTN
The Mountain Training Network [formerly Southeast Kentucky Revitalization Project or SEKYRP] is our newest project in a long line of more community development focused work. Over the last three years our work has spanned the gap between cultural work and community building. Projects like It's Good to be Young in the Mountains proved that cultural work can be a model for economic development. IG2BYITM introduced a model of empowering young people to share their skills and knowledge, celebrate their heritage, and seek new opportunities to learn and grow. MTN fits into that last goal.
MTN is a three-year workforce development project funded by the Appalachian Regional Commission. Our project area includes Knox, Bell, Harlan, Letcher, and Perry County in Southeast Kentucky. MTN aims to make our community members more employable, our communities more livable, and our region more desirable to businesses and investors. The project will offer paid training in construction, design, and hospitality.

MTN has been offering hospitality training institutes since the fall of 2018. The institutes will be hosted at restaurant/inns in the region. Each institute included a three-day, 20-hour training in basic hospitality skills. The trainings were led by specialists in the field with guest speakers. In order to better meet the needs of businesses in our region, we offer trainings for small groups [10 people] or large groups [20 people]. The small institutes offer an opportunity to focus on site-specific or regional needs. Both training models will allow workers to network with other professionals and businesses from the region. Training topics will include front/back of house restaurant training, hotel management, tourism/cultural asset mapping, and soft skills/professionalism. The first hospitality training was in October 2018.

Design Training
MTN hosted the Great Mountain Mural Mega Fest on August 2-5, 2018 and in June 20-23, 2019. The Great Mountain Mural Mega Fest is a gathering of artists, teachers, students, and creative placemakers interested in learning how to create enduring outdoor, large scale murals; work with property owners and local governments to make public art happen; engage schools, youth, and other community members in the design and creation of public murals; and integrate the creation of murals into larger plans for community development and creative placemaking.
At its core, The Great Mountain Mural Mega Fest is a professional development event for working artists. But the gathering has also grown out of efforts in Appalachia and elsewhere to integrate the arts into a holistic approach to making our communities more livable spaces that encourage everyone to see the mountains, the people, and the communities as the vibrant, dynamic places they are, places that are worth investing in, places of opportunity.
We look forward to the next Great Mountain Mural Mega Fest, check back often for updates!
